How to Choose the Right Feed Pellet Machine for Poultry vs. Livestock

One question we hear constantly from feed producers is whether the same pellet mill can handle both poultry and livestock rations effectively. The short answer is that while a single machine can process both, the optimal configuration differs significantly. Poultry feed requires smaller, harder pellets with specific fat levels, while livestock rations favor larger, softer pellets with higher fiber content. We have helped many mills match their equipment to these biological differences, and the right feed pellet machine makes a measurable difference in animal performance and production costs.

Die Hole Size: Small for Poultry, Large for Livestock

The die is the heart of any pellet mill, and hole size directly determines pellet diameter and durability. For poultry, especially broilers and layers, the ideal pellet diameter ranges from 2.0 to 3.5 mm. Smaller birds have limited beak capacity and digestive tract size, so pellets above 4 mm reduce feed intake and cause sorting behavior. A feed pellet machine configured for poultry should use dies with hole diameters of 2.5 mm or 3.0 mm as the standard.

Livestock such as pigs and cattle require much larger pellets. Grower pigs perform well on 4.0 to 6.0 mm pellets, while finishing pigs and beef cattle can handle 6.0 to 8.0 mm or even larger. The reason comes down to chewing behavior and rumen function. Pigs chew larger pellets before swallowing, which stimulates saliva production and enzyme release. For ruminants, larger pellets break down more slowly in the rumen, providing sustained energy release. A food pellet machine intended for livestock should offer die hole diameters of 5.0 mm, 6.0 mm, or 8.0 mm depending on the target species and age group.

Die material and compression ratio also matter. Poultry dies require higher compression ratios (typically 1:12 to 1:16) to produce hard, durable pellets that survive pneumatic conveying and bulk handling. Livestock dies use lower compression ratios (1:8 to 1:12) because the pellets do not need the same mechanical strength, and softer pellets are actually preferred for cattle.

Conditioner Type and Capacity Requirements

Conditioning prepares the mash for pelleting by adding steam and heat. Poultry feed benefits from double or triple-pass conditioners with longer retention times, typically 30 to 60 seconds. This allows starch gelatinization and fat emulsification to occur, improving pellet quality and digestibility. The moisture content after conditioning for poultry should reach 16–18% for optimal binding.

Livestock feed, particularly high-fiber rations containing byproducts like distillers grains or cottonseed meal, requires different conditioning parameters. Retention time can be shorter, around 15 to 30 seconds, because fiber does not respond to steam the way starch does. Over-conditioning livestock feed can make pellets too soft or cause die plugging. We recommend a single-pass conditioner with variable-speed drive to adjust retention time based on recipe. FAMSUN's MUZL series feed pellet machine offers interchangeable conditioner configurations, allowing producers to switch between poultry and livestock modes without replacing the entire unit.

Capacity requirements also diverge significantly. A poultry-focused operation producing 10–15 tons per hour of broiler feed needs a food pellet machine with a 160 kW to 200 kW main motor and a die diameter of at least 600 mm. Livestock operations often run at higher throughputs of 20–40 tons per hour, requiring 250 kW to 450 kW motors and die diameters of 700 mm or larger. The larger die surface area accommodates the lower compression ratios used for livestock without sacrificing production rate.

At FAMSUN, we have designed our pelleting solutions to address these species-specific needs. Our MUZL series includes models ranging from 55 kW to 500 kW, with die diameters from 420 mm to 800 mm. The modular conditioner system supports single, double, or triple-pass configurations, and our intelligent control system stores recipes for different animal types. FAMSUN also provides die recommendations based on your specific feed formulations, ensuring that every feed pellet machine we deliver matches your target species exactly.

Choosing between poultry and livestock pelleting comes down to three factors: die hole size (2.5–3.5 mm for poultry, 5.0–8.0 mm for livestock), conditioner type (long retention for poultry, shorter for livestock), and motor capacity (smaller for poultry, larger for livestock). A flexible food pellet machine can handle both with the right configuration and recipe management. FAMSUN's MUZL series delivers that flexibility, helping feed producers serve multiple species from a single production line.
